the fourth wall
This book explores the fourth wall – that is – the invisible boundary between fiction and reality – as it was employed by German theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht. It documents through typography and iconography one particular performance of one particular play by Brecht – The Measures Taken. The book begins with a prelude which details the fourth wall as it occurs in theatre and other fictitious art forms.
The Measures Taken contains a play within itself – that is – a play within a play. There are different layers of information – and thus of typographic style – within the book in accordance with how many ‘fourth walls’ the reader is looking through at a given time.
