autism:the bigger picture
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Individuals who are diagnosed with Autism face challenges such as impaired social interaction and communication. These difficulties seem to define the disorder, which leads to a misunderstanding of the capabilities of autistic people, and in many cases leads to societal discrimination. There is a need for a new understanding of the condition which takes into consideration the strengths and the challenges people with autism face. People need to understand that while their brains work differently they offer a new perspective on the world around us.
My publication visualises this new perspective by highlighting the strengths and achievements of autistic people while taking into account the challenges they face on a daily basis. The aim is to educate the public on how they can cater for their different needs by creating an overall awareness of their strengths and hopefully lead to new opportunities and empowerment.
