Svefn-G-Englar

limited edition single cover

A song taken from the Icelandic band Sigur Rós’s second album Ágætis Byrjun (1999), Svefn-G-Englar has provided Visual Communications Year 3 Students with an opportunity to visually interpret and respond to a piece of music.

Using the format of a 12’ limited edition single cover with photography as the dominant medium a brief was co-written with Fergal Lawlor of the Cranberries with Fergal contributing to the project in group critiques and discussions. Year 3 responded to the themes, moods and atmospheres suggested by the song including the key theme contained in the song’s lyrics where the birthing process is described from the perspective of the soon-to-be newborn.

Reflecting on the project Fergal stated:
“When I was originally contacted to collaborate on a project with LSAD that was inspired by a piece of music, the first thought that jumped into my head was ‘Sigur Ros’. I have been a massive fan of these Icelandic musicians for many years and had the privilege of seeing them play live in 2013. It was the most stunning experience both visually and sonically I have ever witnessed. The song that stood out most on the evening was ‘Svefn-G-Englar’, which coincidentally is the first song I had ever heard by the band. Fifteen years later, it still sends shivers up my spine whenever I hear it, so I thought if this song has the power to move me in such a way, then hopefully it could inspire the Students to create some beautiful cover artwork. Having recently seen the completed projects, I am delighted to say that my expectation has been exceeded. It was an honour to be involved with such talented, creative people”.
