serotonin: the mood drug
Food is human fuel. We need it to survive. It plays a huge role in our lives as we use it in celebration and in sorrow. However we never actually think about the affect the food we eat is having on our mood.
We all know the rise of obesity is to do with the foods we are eating but we never make the connection between the rise in depression with the food we are eating. What we eat plays a large part in how we feel. It is too easy to turn to anti-depressants when we are feeling down but in actual fact the same brain chemicals that are altered by anti-depressant drugs are also affected by the foods we eat.
Serotonin is a chemical that affects our mood and in humans serotonin levels are affected by our diet. Eating a balanced diet is the most important way of keeping serotinin levels consistent and keeping our moods regulated.
