Una Gildea / Guest Lecturer

Una is an artist and illustrator who uses animation, collage, painting and drawing in her work. She studied painting, drawing and print making at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam and The School of Visual Arts, New York and animation at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Her work has been exhibited widely and featured in The Irish Times, The Sunday Tribune, WomenMeanBusiness and CARA magazine. Her films have been shown at various festivals both here in Ireland, and in Europe. Una is a member of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland and is represented in New York by The July Group.

We asked Una what inspired her:
Artists Hannah Hoch, Saul Steinberg, Modigliani, Constant, Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele, Ben Nicholson, Henry Darger, Max Ernst, Otto Dix and other artists from the Expressionism movement.
Artists / filmmakers (animation) Joseph Cornell, Larry Jordan, Caroline Leaf, Martha Colburn, William Kentridge, Paul Driessen, Michael Dudok De Wit – to mention but a few!)
‘Expressionist Portraits’ by Frank Whitford A book which inspired her love of the portrait as an art form.
‘Experimental Animation Origins of a New art’ by Robert Russett and Cecile Starr A great source book, packed with interviews and first-person accounts that describes the work of 38 innovative artist-filmmakers.
